Exploring the Wonders of Songaksan (송악 산) Mountain: A Perfect Day Trip on Jeju Island

Exploring the Wonders of Songaksan (송악 산) Mountain:        A Perfect Day Trip on Jeju Island

Early Morning Excitement: Seizing the Day with a Quick Break

The day began on a lucky note—I got an early break from work (who doesn’t love that?), and I decided to make the most of it by heading out for a day of exploration. After a hearty meal and a quick rest, my travel companion and I set off, fueled by excitement and curiosity.

Our destination? The famous Songaksan Mountain — known for its volcanic landscapes, historical significance, and natural wonders. But first, we made a refreshing stop at the nearby Sagye-ri Beach.

Sagye-ri Beach: Where Legendary Women Dive Without Tanks

Sagye-ri Beach is not just a picturesque stretch of sand — it’s a hub for adventure lovers and culture enthusiasts alike. Here, the legendary Haenyeo women divers make their living diving deep underwater to harvest seafood, all without oxygen tanks! Imagine holding your breath for up to two minutes underwater and emerging with fresh catches — now that’s a skill.

Netflix recently featured a documentary about these incredible divers, and seeing them in action is a true testament to Jeju’s rich culture. If you’re into water sports, Sagye-ri Beach also offers plenty of activities—from kayaking to jet skiing, making it a perfect spot for thrill-seekers.

On sunny days, local families from Jeju can be seen enjoying their free time here — fathers casting lines with their kids along the rocks, mothers preparing snacks under sun umbrellas. Some even try their hand at surfing or swimming in the clear waters. It’s a lively, heartwarming scene of island life.

Nature’s Art: Sandy Beaches and Sculpted Rocks

After soaking in the culture and energy at Sagye-ri, we wandered along its sandy shores. What makes this beach truly special are the unique rock formations shaped by centuries of waves and wind. The natural sculptures here create stunning backdrops, ideal for photography or simply enjoying the calming sound of the ocean.

The sky stretched endlessly, painted with soft clouds drifting lazily above the deep blue ocean. The sunlight glistened on the waves, and a cool breeze carried the scent of salt and earth. The view was like a living painting — one that changes with every passing minute.

We took some memorable photos and rested a bit before hitting the trail towards the main highlight — Songaksan Mountain.

A Walk Through Time: Exploring Ancient Footprints and Lava Rock Formation

As we started our hike, we stumbled upon a historical site that tells a story millions of years in the making. Embedded in the lava rocks near the ocean were footprints — not just any footprints, but those of ancient animals and early humans who once roamed this land.

This rare geological treasure connects visitors with Jeju’s prehistoric past, offering a glimpse into a time long before the island became the tourist hotspot it is today.

The Sunrise Viewpoint: The Magical Two Brothers Rocks

One of the most iconic views near Songaksan is where the sun rises perfectly between two rock formations known as the “Two Brothers.” This sight is so enchanting that photographers flock here every morning to capture the perfect shot.

Though we arrived in the evening and missed the sunrise, the sheer beauty of this spot still left us awestruck. The sky glowed in shades of orange, pink, and gold, reflecting gently across the calm sea. My wife even got creative with a playful photo, pretending to hold the clouds in her hands — a moment of pure joy against a backdrop of endless blue.

Evening Strolls and Echoes of History

As the day progressed, our path took us past cozy hotels, bustling restaurants, and a large park filled with families enjoying the cool evening breeze. The atmosphere was warm and inviting — perfect for winding down after a day of hiking.

We also learned about a somber part of Jeju’s history here. During World War II, between 1942 and 1945, the Japanese military forced local residents into labor, digging tunnels and building shelters inside Songaksan Mountain. These hidden sites serve as a poignant reminder of resilience amid hardship.

The Challenge of the Summer Heat and the Cedar-Shaded Trail

Hiking Songaksan in summer is no joke — the sun blazes down mercilessly, especially during June to August, and this year’s dry spell made it even hotter. The trail is lined with cedar trees, providing some much-needed shade, but the climb can still be exhausting.

Still, with the ocean breeze occasionally sweeping across the trail, the sounds of nature all around, and the scenic views of mountains, cliffs, and sparkling waves, it becomes a spiritual experience. We made sure to pace ourselves, staying hydrated and taking breaks to soak in the stunning views. The effort was well worth it!

Finally, the Crater: Nature’s Majestic Masterpiece

Unlike my previous trip, this time we chose the path leading directly to Songaksan’s volcanic crater — a natural wonder that truly steals the show. The crater is not just a geological marvel but also offers one of the most spectacular 360-degree views on the island.

From the summit, you can see Gapado Island, Marado Island, Hallasan Mountain, Seongsan Mountain, and the unique “Triangle Mountain” — a favorite of mine, even if I can’t recall its official name.

Adding to the charm, we spotted a horse and its foal gently making their way up the trail — a peaceful reminder of the mountain’s natural harmony. The scene, with rolling green hills meeting the deep blue sea, was the definition of untouched beauty.

Golden Hour: Capturing the Sunset and Final Shots

As the sun dipped below the horizon, we captured some stunning photos and even a video that turned out better than we imagined. The soft light of the golden hour painted everything in warm hues, making the landscape even more magical.

The ocean shimmered like gold, the sky lit up in a dramatic blend of fire and calm, and shadows danced along the cliffs of the mountain. We stopped at a large park nearby to rest, surrounded by the gentle sound of waves and a refreshing evening breeze.

Heading Home: Buses, Groceries, and Evening Serenity

To end the day, we caught the 752 bus to Museulpo, where we picked up some groceries before boarding the 251 bus back home. The evening was serene — waves lapping gently and a cool breeze flowing through the streets, reminding us of the simple pleasures after a day full of adventure.
